Camino: Laughter and Tears along Spainâ??s 500-mile Camino De Santiago

by John H. Clark III

A dream fulfilled

Traveling overseas and backpacking around Europe seemed like an out-of-reach dream for John Clark, until he learned of the Camino de Santiago in Spain, a 500-mile pilgrimage across the country that dates back more than 1,200 years. With encouragement from family and friends, never having traveled outside the United States, the self-proclaimed homebody from Texas hopped on a plane at age 53 alone and headed for the Iberian Peninsula. It wasn’t just the beginning of a month-long journey, but also, as he would discover, the beginning of a new life.

Facing fear, regret and reality

When he arrived in Pamplona, home of the famous San Fermin Running of the Bulls Festival, Clark immediately began to regret his decision. To put it bluntly, he was scared to death. Possessed by an obsessive mind, he could not shake the idea that he was all alone in a foreign country, some 5,000 miles and an ocean’s distance away from home, about to go on a very long walk with nothing but a backpack full of basic supplies. His first impulse was to simply pack up and go back home, but somehow, though full of anxiety, he survived that first sleepless night in a hotel room near the Plaza del Castillo, and began his trek the following day.

What did he discover?

What happened to John Clark on his 500-mile pilgrimage? Did he make it? Find out when you crack open this colorful, insightful, and revelatory memoir full of tears and triumph. Be inspired as you experience this harrowing and heartwarming coming-of-age story that proves it’s never too late in life for a new adventure.

UC Berkeley Cal Football Game Day (Visit Berkeley)

by Jenny Love

Berkeley is Bear Territory, and there is no better way to experience the UC Berkeley Football season than going to a game at the California Memorial Stadium. It’s an historic stadium, with some seating that affords views of the San Francisco Bay or Strawberry Canyon, depending on where your seat is, but for the hardcore fans, these views don’t matter – it’s all about the game. The Cal Football team plays in the Pac-12 network.

Now, what should you do if you don’t have tickets to a game? There’s a hill to the east of the stadium with free views of the game, locally known as Tightwad Hill or Charter Hill.

There are plenty of opportunities around Berkeley for pre game and post game celebration, eats and drinks! There are a lot of Downtown Berkeley and Southside spots around town that show the games on large screens and have awesome food specials to boot. Learn more about where to cheer on our Golden Bears in the UC Berkeley Cal Football Game Day Microguide!

Mandarin Optional

by Darby Jones

Described by many of its early fans as ‘The Game’ set in the Far East, ‘Mandarin Optional’ is the first in a series of novels following the amorous adventures of two intrepid travellers that explore the hidden delights of Asia.
This first installment takes place in Bangkok where the female quarries are not sexy go-go girls and sultry Thai beauties but visiting Chinese tourists, who are now flocking to the Thai capital in their thousands looking for fun, frolics and romance. In a style that is part-field report, part-travelogue and part-instruction manual, ‘Mandarin Optional’ reveals the secrets of two self-confessed playboys as they gorge themselves to excess in a frenzy of Asian females.
This is an immensely enjoyable read, hilarious in parts and instantly recognisable to anybody already familiar with Thailand and Thai culture. It is a godsend for any man planning to visit the Land of Smiles as the Thai Kingdom is also known. There is even a detailed glossary of terms, explaining all the Thai and Chinese phrases, and even some of the more obscure Britishisms that might puzzle international readers. What Neil Strauss did for the American AFC, Darby Jones is now doing for adventurous expats based in the Far East, whose tastes are distinctly of the Asian persuasion.
